Glacial acetic acid, a highly concentrated, water-free (anhydrous) form of acetic acid, is widely used as a chemical reagent in laboratories. The name “glacial” comes from the solid ice-like crystals that form with agitation, slightly below room temperature at 16.6 °C (61.9 °F).
Glacial acetic acid is used for synthesis, pH adjustments, and titration experiments. It can also be used for pH adjustment of samples (to pH 6 or 7) prior to distilling them for cyanide analysis. This adjustment prevents fatty acids from distilling over with the cyanide. For more details, see Method 8027.
Acetic Acid, Glacial. ACS Grade, CAS No. 64-19-7 C2H4O2, FW = 60.05, 500 mL bottle
