Potassium is one of the most common elements on earth. In water, potassium levels are usually less than 20 mg/L, but levels can be higher or lower. Potassium compounds such as potassium nitrate, are popular synthetic fertilizers. Runoff from treated fields can release potassium into surface water.

Potassium levels are measured to ensure the quality and safety of water, to evaluate soil fertility and the impact of land use on soil potassium levels, and in oil and gas field waters. The tetraphenylborate method is a commonly used method for determining potassium due to its simplicity, speed, and cost-effectiveness. In this method, potassium in the sample reacts with sodium tetraphenylborate to form potassium tetraphenylborate, an insoluble white solid. The amount of turbidity produced is proportional to the potassium concentration.

Hach Method 10321. Range: 0.1 - 7.0 mg/L K. Set includes: Lithium Hydroxide Pillows, Sodium Gluconate Pillows, and Potassium 4 Reagent Powder Pillows. (This method does NOT use formaldehyde).
